These documents relate to the essential domains and everyday needs of the royal household complex in Hanuman Dhoka managed by the kapardār. In the early 19th century, the kapardār, through his office in the Kadel Chowk courtyard inside Hanuman Dhoka, administered myriad processes. He oversaw saltpeter procurement, gunpowder production, artisans working on various mediums and metals, clothing, storage spaces, cattle farms, and food supplies (See RRC_0024_0776). He had authority over the whole chain from production to transportation to storage to distribution. These processes were made possible by the work of a range of peoples attached to the royal household through various conditions of labour and service.
