The brutal struggle for a homeland—and the associated territorial claims—that so many people in diverse parts of the world are experiencing today can already be found in a grand narrative in the very first chapters of the Bible, a narrative that is taken up and further developed in a variety of ways through music and imagery: The Israelites, oppressed during their exile in Egypt, succeed—with God’s (brutal) help—in setting out toward freedom. Handel’s *Israel in Egypt* is a powerful story of the ever-recurring search for a homeland. In this performance, the visually striking texts are meant to be experienced and felt through music—in dialogue with images of very different seekers of a homeland, in this case the Taiwanese multimedia artist FENG Chi-Han, who brings the story into the present and makes it tangible.
