At a time when more scientific writing is produced than is read, when securing third-party funding is the be-all and end-all and drives and shortens research cycles, at a time when disciplinary fragmentation is increasing due to complex research questions, in which the gap between academia and popular science is growing alarmingly wider and the question of how to deal with fake news and the importance of effective communication between science and the public is becoming increasingly pressing, the desire for a successful dialogue among the various stakeholders in knowledge takes center stage. Language and communication serve as the medium and link between these different arenas. Science communication provides key concepts for conducting a recipient-oriented dialogue and for understanding science as part of societal participation.

The WIN Kolleg is organizing the Day of Interdisciplinary Science Communication for all interested parties from the general public, the scientific community, and the Academy. The focus will be on different levels of science communication: communication within a discipline, between disciplines, within a scientific generation, between different generations, within the Academy, and between science and the public or society. The Day of Interdisciplinary Science Communication aims, on the one hand, to strengthen collaborative research and work within the Academy and, on the other hand, to promote communication with the outside world.

Following the opening lecture by Markus Weißkopf, plenary presentations will be given in the morning by Senja Post, Helen Fischer, and Ekkehard Felder. In the afternoon, small-group sessions will take place on the topics “Trust in Science” (moderated by Martin Gerchen) and “Science-Based Policy Making” (moderated by Fruzsina Molnár-Gábor). The public program concludes with a panel discussion titled “Interdisciplinary Science Communication in Science and Society: A Utopia?”
