Elephants have played a special role in Nepal’s history as a symbol of royalty, for their use in battle and hunting, or as gifts. They are well documented from the Licchavi and Malla periods. However, it is only from the Śāhā and Rāṇā periods onward that we learn specific details about the practical management of elephants.
