Publication period: 1990–2009

Martin Luther’s writings, collected in 70 volumes of the “Weimar Edition,” constitute the most significant body of work—in terms of both scope and importance—by any German author prior to Goethe. Their national and international impact extends far beyond the history of the church and theology into the broader history of culture and the humanities. No writer before or after Luther has exerted a comparable influence on the development of the German language. However, due to its sheer volume and diversity, his body of work is difficult to grasp in its entirety. The indexes make this wealth of texts accessible not only to theologians but also to philologists, philosophers, historians, and scholars of art, law, social history, literary history, and the history of science across all disciplines—and, not least, to those interested in the church, politics, culture, and other areas of public life.

Following the Place Index (1986) and the Name Index (1987), the Latin Subject Index (1990–1999) and the German Subject Index (2001–2009) were each published in five volumes.

With the delivery of the final index volume in 2009, the Weimar Edition of Luther (external link), which began in 1883, was completed. 126 years after the publication of the first volume, the most comprehensive written legacy of a German author is now available in a critical complete edition.
