Publication period: 1972–2012

Founded in 1924, the *Année Philologique* is the only comprehensive international scholarly bibliography covering the entire field of classical studies, which was published annually until 2012. It covers the fields of literature (pagan and early Christian), linguistics, textual criticism, papyrology, archaeology, epigraphy, history (including economic, social, and intellectual history), history of religion, legal history, philosophy, and the history of the natural sciences. Chronologically, it spans the three millennia from ca. 2000 BCE (Mycenae, Crete) to ca. 800 CE (literature of the early Middle Ages).

The advantage of this bibliography is that it not only includes every newly published, as well as every review of such books for a period of five years, but also—and in particular—that all articles excerpted from over 1,000 journals, as well as numerous contributions published in anthologies, are provided with a summary.

The project was spread across various offices: The headquarters was located in Paris; there were Branch Offices in the U.S. (since 1965, currently in Cincinnati, Ohio), in Heidelberg (since 1972), in Lausanne (since 1977), in Genoa (since 1995), in Granada (since 2000), and in Victoria, Canada (since 2005). The Heidelberg Branch Office handled the literature published in Germany and Austria, which accounted for approximately 20% of the total volume.

The “Année Philologique” was published once a year in book form. In addition, there is an online database (external link), in which all volumes are accessible to subscribers; numerous academic libraries provide their users with free access to this online database, such as the Heidelberg University Library at http://www.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/helios/. Since 2009, this online database has also made the records from the current editorial year available as “interim records.”
