We are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Hans Joas during the 2023 Academy lecture series (external link), one of the most internationally renowned sociologists and social philosophers of our time, as our guest speaker for this year’s Academy Lecture . Hans Joas is known for his groundbreaking work on the origins of values, the sociology of religion, American pragmatism, and violence research. He is currently the Ernst Troeltsch Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Theology at Humboldt University in Berlin. Previously, he served, among other roles, as a Permanent Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and as Director of the Max Weber College for Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt. In addition, he serves as Visiting Professor of Sociology and Social Thought and as a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, and is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. 

Hans Joas has received numerous awards for his outstanding scholarly achievements, including the Max Planck Research Award, the Hans Kilian Prize, and the Prix Paul Ricœur.
