Caesarius Revisited 1: Collections of Examples and Editorial Practice

The Cistercian monk Caesarius of Heisterbach (ca. 1180–1240) is one of the best-known and most widely read authors of spiritual and didactic literature of his time. His time in the order was marked by travels to monasteries affiliated with or branching off from Heisterbach, by his service as novice master, and, in particular, by his work as the author of a large number of works. He is best known for his *Dialogus miraculorum* as well as for the hagiographies of Elizabeth of Thuringia and Engelbert I, Archbishop of Cologne. By contrast, the so-called “Eight Books of Miracles” (Libri VIII miraculorum), which Caesarius compiled shortly after his famous “Dialogus.” The rich narrative material in his works makes them a remarkable source for the political, cultural, and religious history of the 13th century.

The digital workshop series “Caesarius Revisited: Current Research on Caesarius of Heisterbach” builds on this foundation and invites participants to an interdisciplinary discussion of the author and his work. Over the course of three sessions, excerpts from sources and various facets of research will be discussed, beginning with a focus on collections of exempla and editorial practice (additional topics: 2. Heisterbach and the region; 3. Caesarius and gender).
Format: Each presentation, including discussion, will have a 30-minute time slot. The program includes short introductory presentations (approx. 10–15 minutes) followed by a joint discussion of source passages, translations, research questions, editorial techniques, etc. Participants are welcome to raise open questions or research problems for discussion.
Following all presentations, overarching questions and issues from current research projects can be discussed in greater depth together.
