The workshop will focus on the new edition of the writings on Max Weber (KJG I/19), which is being produced in collaboration with Dr. Edith Hanke, the long-time editor and general editor of the Max Weber Complete Works (MWG). In addition to the three writings published during his lifetime, this volume will include, for the first time, Jaspers’s final notes on Weber from the 1960s—which until now have been known only through sparse, sometimes incorrectly transcribed excerpts—as well as original letters from Karl and Gertrud Jaspers to Max and Marianne Weber, respectively, that were discovered just a few months ago in the “Archive of the German Women’s Movement” (Kassel).

Dirk Fonfara will explain the structure of the volume and the current status of the editorial work. The focus will be on the letter from Jaspers to Weber discovered in Kassel—the only one of its kind to have survived to date. Dated November 1913, the seven-page letter deals with Weber’s essay “Categories,” which Jaspers had received from the author for critical review shortly before it went to press. In the second part of the workshop, Bernd Weidmann will present Jaspers’ final notes on Weber, distinguishing them from the history of reception—which was largely shaped by Dieter Henrich.
