Theologian and Academy President Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Christoph Markschies has been admitted to the Order of Pour le mérite for Sciences and Arts. This honor ranks among the highest distinctions for science and the arts in Germany.

In addition, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded Christoph Markschies the Grand Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The professor of Ancient Christianity at Humboldt University in Berlin has served as president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2020 and as president of the Union (of the Academies) since 2022. Markschies has already received numerous awards for his scholarly work and is a member of numerous academies of sciences as well as president of the Union (of the Academies) of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. He has also been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2004.
