Academy Day 2023

“What Is Justice? – A Global Comparison of Concepts of Justice”

Academy Day is the major annual joint event organized by the scientific academies that make up the Union (of the Academies). The Academy of Sciences in Hamburg and the Lower Saxony Academy of Sciences in Göttingen are responsible for the program content of the 2023 Academies Day in Berlin. The theme of this year’s event is: “What Is Justice? – Concepts of Justice in a Global Comparison.”

The concept of justice has experienced an unprecedented resurgence in recent decades, not only in philosophy but also in social discourse. Calls for justice permeate nearly all major areas of social debate, and sector-specific ideals of justice  —such as social justice, intergenerational justice, and climate justice—highlight key challenges to current structures of action and social orders.

The day’s program is divided into four panels. The topics to be discussed are Justice and Climate, Justice – Education and Culture, Justice – Borders and Migration, and Historical Justice and Cultural Heritage.

The festive evening event will be dedicated to the topic Justice and Human Rights.
