Lutz H. Gade has held the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at Heidelberg University since 2003. After completing his chemistry studies at the University of Bonn and the Technical University of Munich, he went to Cambridge as a doctoral student under Jack Lewis. Following his PhD in 1991, he moved to the University of Würzburg, where he completed his habilitation in 1996 and did research for two more years as a lecturer. In 1998, he was offered a professorship in inorganic chemistry at the University of Strasbourg, where he served as head of the Laboratory of Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis. He has been a member of the Institut Universitaire de France since 2000. In Heidelberg, he was Dean of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, acted as spokesperson for the Collaborative Research Centre "Molecular Catalysis" (SFB 623) and initiated the Collaborative Research Centre "N-Heteropolycycles as Functional Materials" (SFB 1249), of which he is the founding spokesperson. His work in the fields of organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis has received numerous national and international awards. He has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2012 and a corresponding member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature since 2019.
