Economic history has been traditionally a major strand in the historiography of premodern Nepal, especially through the studies of M.C. Regmi. The documents assembled here contribute to this scholarship in two ways. First, they show the manifold ways through which economic practices were embedded in larger social, cultural and religious discourses and institutions like temples, ritual communities or guṭhīs. Second, the documents focus on actors and their strategical use of legal instruments to realize their economic interests and thereby provide examples of the role of societal agency in the formation of economic order in Nepal during the Śāha and Rāṇā periods.
